2010年。
材料や工具類の仕事道具を入れて運ぶ為に、もっと大きくて頑丈なものが欲しいと感じていたぼくたちは、自分たちの為に改めて考えてみることにした。
まず、ポピュラーな綿オックスのスワッチなどを取り寄せてみたものの、ピンとくる感触は特に得られなかった。どうすればこんな素材から自分たちの欲しいものを作り出すことができるのか不安になった事を思い出す。
生産効率や他の何かと引き換える為に失われた物のことを、ぼくらは"ロマン"と呼ぶけれども、大量に作られるこの薄い綿オックスも、彩どりのバリエーションとは逆に何か大切なものが備わっていない顔つきをしていたと思う。小さなサンプルから仕上がりの出来栄えを想像する事は建築の世界を通じて慣れているので、直感からぼくらは敢えて帆布の素材そのものから見直すことにした。

自分の使っていた古いコットンのバッグの中に、内側が真っ黒の、石炭を使っていた時代のものがあった。その頑丈さに惹かれて、言い換えるとマインドをなぞる様に、自分たちのコールバッグを作る事にした。古い時代のキャンバス製品には、縁に配色のスティッチが入ったものがある。ぼくたちはセルヴィッチの事を良く知る世代だし、非常に魅力的に映る好ましいポイントだと思う。恐らくこれが当時の機屋のアイデンティティなのだろう。何から手をつけて良いのかわからなかった帆布の開発は、ここから始めるべきだと確信に変わった。

幸運だったのは、全く何もわからない綿の生地の世界を覗く際に、誰にもアドバイスを求めなかった事かもしれない。助けを求めるのは楽だけれども、それは誰か他の人の目を、感覚を通してしまう事にもなる。 老舗の機屋に目星を付けたのは、生来の博打勘だと思う。赴いてみて驚いたのは、世界中を見渡しても他では稼働していないほど古いシャトル織機が、戦前から存在する古い木造の工場の中で唸りを上げて動いていた事だった。

セルビッチが出来るシャトル織機は、ヨーロッパで生まれた技術革新に追い越されて次第に新しい機械に置き換えられていくのだが、震源地から離れれば離れるほど伝わるインパクトが小さくなるように、ファーイーストの日本では幸運にも、その旧式の機械が生き残ることができた。機械型織機の原型と言えるシャトルの仕組みが発明された当時のものと殆ど変わらない。手織り織機に動力が付加された様なもの、それがシャトル織機だ。木綿の布を織る伝統の仕組みを変えずに、機械化されたことで超高密度な織布が打ち込める様にもなった。程良く引き締まりながら、柔らかな表情も見せてくれるぼくたちの帆布は、永く使い続けることでまた新たな風合いに変化していく。

Whilst we wanted something bigger and stronger to carry the work tools and materials, so we decided to make the bags for ourselves. First, I got the popular cotton oxford swatches, but I couldn't get a particularly sharp feel. I remember being worried about how we could create what we wanted from such materials.
What we call "romance" is what is lost in exchange for production efficiency or something else, but that thin canvas which is made in large quantities, was seemed something empty as opposed to the colorful variations. I think it had a look that wasn't equipped with anything passion. I'm used to imagining the finished product from a small sample throughout the world of architecture, so from my intuition we decided to daringly review the canvas material itself.

One of the old cotton bags I had was from the time when coal was used in your home, with a dirty black inside. Attracted by its ruggedness, in other words, we decided to make our own coal bag to trace the mind. Some older canvas products have coloured stitches on the edges. We are a generation who knows Selvadge well, and I think it is a good point to look very attractive. Perhaps this was the identity of the loom shop at that time. I was convinced that the development of canvas which I didn't know what to start with, should start from here.

Fortunately, I didn’t ask anyone for advice when I looked into the world of textiles where I didn't know anything at all. It's easy to ask for help, but it also lets someone else's feelings add to your senses.
Gambling intuition by nature had guided me to the long-established textile mill. What surprised me when I went there was that the shuttle loom, which was legendary old machine that it hadn’t exist nowhere else even if I looked around the world, was roaring and weaving precisely in the big old shed that existed from Pre-World War II.

Selvedge shuttle looms had been overtaken by technological innovations born in Europe and gradually replaced by new machines. And luckily still going well in Far East Japan, the farther away from the epicenter, the smaller the transmitted impact. The old-fashioned machines were able to survive. The shuttle loom is like a hand-woven loom with power added. It has made it possible to drive ultra-high-density woven cloth without changing the traditional mechanism of weaving cotton cloth.

When we first touched our special canvas we noticed how difficult it was to sew, but the progress was so rapid that our first exhibition held just three months later.
One at a time. Cut the canvas and set it up to the walking foot machine. The texture of our canvas is moderately firm and shows a soft touch, will change to a bright texture as it is used for day by day. Will be getting better with age.
